New IP Address and Changes to Downloads

Hello everyone! It's been quite some time since I've last posted an update here on the blog. As many of you know, KDW is a fan project that continues to remain running for the fans. This means, despite not being actively developed as it was back in the day, we keep it up to date and running for the fans who still enjoy it. Opening back in 2006, KDW has been a part of a lot of people's childhood, and because so many people grew up with it, we want to keep it going for as long as we can. Heck, it's already been 16 years! I was only 14 going on 15 when this project started up, and now it's been more than half my life that it's been going... So yeah! We don't plan on fully shutting down anytime soon. Of course, that's not to say we don't welcome new members as well! Personally it's my hope that many more new fans will continue to enjoy KDW as well, just as everyone who came before them did in years past...

But anyway, that's all besides the point.

The point of today's post is to let everyone know that the KDW server has been relocated, and due to this the IP address has changed. The new IP has been added to the "Patches" section under downloads -- but even this too has changed. In the past we required members to join our forums to access KDW's download page, but when the forums shut down we simply put the link here on the website. However, considering how big Discord is now days, and the fact that most of our members are Discord members as well -- we will now be requiring a Discord membership and access to our server to access the download page. This will not only allow us to stay in contact with future members of the KDW community, but it will continue what KDW is all about. It is a virtual community, where fans of all ages can meet, and have fun. Discord brings us together even without KDW's virtual world, but of course thee virtual side will continue running as well.

Anyway, feel free to head on over to our Discord to get the latest game update! We have also posted the new IP address there as well. Thanks!

Direct X7 Fix is Now Live

This one comes from our friend Blaui! For some newer PCs with the later versions of Windows, KDW is completely unplayable due to issues with Direct X7 no longer being supported. If you are one of those who have come across this, the below fix should take care of it:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9-1w8To9VBNdmIyclFKQ2NsYkU

This very same file is also listed under the main KDW download folder in our download section, and can be found under the "KDW Fixes" folder.

Simply download the zip folder, and follow the instructions (also provided by Blaui) inside.

Note: Although this fix is directed at those experiencing Direct X or Active X errors within KDW, it may solve other errors as well. If you are having problems getting KDW to run, it is recommended that you try this step as well.

KDW IP Address Change

Having trouble logging into KDW? Well sadly our IP address has changed. It's actually been quite a long time since we've had this issue (a few years actually), but it has happened once again. So, what do you do? It's simple. We have added a new patch folder to our download list, which can also be accessed below. Whenever something new is added to KDW, simply go to that link, download the new files, and copy them into your KDW client folder. It'll ask you to overwrite the current data, and all you have to do is say yes. In this case, it'll be a config file.

Sorry about the mess up guys, but this is something we don't have control over ourselves.

For the latest patch, CLICK HERE and open the "patch" folder, and open the latest date. Currently there will only be one for 8-22-2016, but in the future we will add others.

KDW Official Discord Server

Earlier this week some die hard KDW fans decided to create a Discord Server for everyone. Although it started as a fan server, from this moment on I am going to consider it to be official -- a follow up to our old forum chat rooms, and our good old Xat. If you'd like to join us, just click the link below:

10 Years Later

Well here we are, June of 2016. It's hard to believe that 10 years ago was the day that Kirby's Dream World first opened. So much has happened during this last decade, and now I'm left looking back on how this small fan project changed so many lives. Never once did I think that things would turn out the way they did, but because of that I made so many wonderful memories I'll never forget... But enough of that. There's really not much I can say here that hasn't been said before, so let me get right to what I wanted to say.

With KDW turning 10 on June 7th, I just wanted everyone to know that nothing is changing with it. Last year we held an event for the 9th anniversary (which had quite the turn out), but this year it won't be something as big. KDW will simply be online as it has been for the past year, and anyone who would like to reflect on the past is more than welcome to log in. Originally I had planned to have last years big event to happen this year instead, but honestly I wasn't sure if we would still be around another year. With the (then) upcoming release of Windoes 10, there was no guarantee that KDW would still run on it. Well, thankfully things turned out fine, and VB6 (which is what KDW runs off if) is still one of those things that "just works" with the new OS.

Anyway, things haven't changed, and things won't be changing. While we are no longer in active development, new content is still added from time to time, and a handful of members still populate the world every so often as well. We know that while KDW may be extremely outdated by today's standards (or even standards from 10 years ago), there are still those out there who love it, and we want to continue it as long as possible. KDW is a world that was built by hundreds of fans over the years, and that's something we don't want to throw away anytime soon.

So anyway, happy birthday KDW, and I hope to see you guys again on the 7th.

KDW Continues on Windows 10!

We are happy to announce that our worse fears are no more. Kirby's Dream World has made the jump to Windows 10!

Honestly this is something we were unsure of since the announcement last year. KDW was created using VB6 which had it's last release in the late 90s. Due to this Windows XP was the last version to officially support it as they moved to .NET. So, what does this mean? Well, nothing for you. Microsoft has always had a "it just works" policy when it comes to VB6, and although Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 weren't made to support it, there were always ways to get programs made using it to run. Microsoft still hosts the Runtime Files, and there's a Windows fix out there (both of which are a part of KDW's setup). Although VB6 is technically "dead," it still managed to survive.

When Windows 10 was announced there was no hard evidence that this trend would continue. Windows 10 was released as the "final" version of Windows, with major updates being released for it, and there was really no way for us to tell how KDW would react to it until the final product was out. Well, it works.

If you have already installed KDW on either Windows 7 or 8/8.1 and you upgraded to Windows 10, then you are set. The files carried over, and KDW will work just fine. On the other hand if you're new to KDW, well, The Windows 8/8.1 guide will have you covered. Just run the Runtime Files as an admin and install the Windows Fix and you will be fine.

Well, that's it for now guys. Here's to another 10 years of Windows!

Forums have been Updated

Great news! After quite the wait, our forums have finally been updated. We've been meaning to upgrade our service for quite some time now, but it was actually a matter that was out of our hands. Well, thanks to the great folks over at Zetaboards, we were finally able to make the jump to the new software. So, if you haven't seen it yet, feel free to click that forum button to the right of this post! Of course we still have quite a bit more work to do on it (new Banner, custom Kirby skin, etc), but for now we'll be using a slightly modified Netto's Game Room default theme -- just as we do for this blog. We have the rights to use it, so why not?
