KDW Trivia: Fun Fact #5 - The Beach

Did you know that the Beach has undergone a number of changes, the biggest being the addition of a mountain? Originally the Beach was nothing but flat land which lead into the desert off to the East; however, one day a mysterious mountain range appeared. Who put it there? Now that is a mystery to everyone... It simply appeared, and soon it became an important aspect of the area. Other than this, the Beach's music has also changed a number of times, at one point you could "swim" in the water, and it was completely enemy free with a Life Guard!

Another interesting thing about the Beach is, well, it's been the Summer Beach Party since 2006. Originally both maps were simply labeled "Beach," but early on in the summer the name was changed for a "Summer Event." This "Event" has continued on through the years, never ending. The special drinks can still be picked up, and the little tent they can be found under is still in place.

For anyone who would like to see the original Beach, it can be found in the KDW Archives. Simply go to Legend's Cafe, follow the hall down to the left, and enter one of the unlocked doors.

KDW Trivia: Fun Fact #4 - The Hang-Out

Did you know that the "Hang-Out" was the first area created, that it is/was home to Steve the Tree, and that it holds many dream world records?

Originally the area was a test area created by Legend and the GM Vile. It was a bland map with grass, some water to the south, a tree to the west, and a fence to the north. A "race track" was also placed in the center for Legend and Vile to drive around on their default go-kart sprites, but this was soon removed for the first Beta release.

For many years the Hang-Out had two "issues" that many players came to love. The first was how you entered Dream World -- standing on a fence. By default when players entered the world for the first time, and whenever they died, they would spawn to the north of the Hang-Out on top of the fence. Sure all they would have to do is step down to get off of it, but for some that was confusing. Also because of this, signs and other objects could not be placed to the south of where players spawned, or they would become stuck. To avoid this issue, the signs to help new players were placed around the spawn point leaving a gap which is still there to this day.

The other issue with the Hang-Out is a little tree fans decided to name "Steve." Steve the Tree is (or as some would say "was") the tree that stands on the west side of the map. Originally Steve was an incomplete tree. Due to the lack of tiles, Steve's right side was completely cut off at a sharp angle (making it obvious that the tiles were missing). It wasn't something that could be fixed back then, but when it was finally fixed fans revolted. SAVE STEVE! This is an argument that continues even to this day. Some would rather have him fixed, others would rather see the leafs being cut off. This is the reason why Steve's appearance constantly changes as sometimes his leafs are gone, and and other times they are there. Although, the original Steve can forever be seen in one of the other Hang-Outs.

While most maps in KDW are unique single areas, the Hang-Out is special as it has a seemingly endless amount of clones. For example, there's the real Hang-Out, there is a past version, a future version, there are two fake Hang-Outs in the puzzle chamber, a "Memory Lane" version, an archive version from the early days of KDW, and there are also Hang-Outs that resemble THE Hang-Out, but at the same time are maps of their own. Of course most of these clones are hidden within KDW, and may never even be found by some players out there, but that doesn't change the fact that they are there. Just remember, if the Hang-Out looks different to you, then it most likely isn't the real one.

Besides having a crazy amount of clones, the Hang-Out is the map with the most entrances. There's the entrance from the Newbie School from when you first start KDW, there's the way in from the beach, the entrance from the park, the entrance from the fields, an entrance from a hidden area across the sea to the south (which opens during special times), and the stairs coming from the Eon8 bunker; however, that's not all. All throughout KDW are warps that will take you back to the Hang-Out. Just how many warps are there? Who knows! One thing is for sure though, nearly every corner of the game will bring you back, and just about every secret path will contain at least one way back as well. If you ever get lost, and your Kirby Cell isn't set, then just keep on exploring and sooner or later you'll be at the Hang-Out.

The other records the Hang-Out holds are less noticeable. It is the map that tends to change the most (as it has had small updates over time and is typically used for special events), and it is also the map people tend to spend the most time in. Despite there being over 3,000 maps in game, the Hang-Out is a place most people go to do just that.

KDW Trivia: Fun Fact #3 - An Original World

Did you know that Kirby's Dream World is almost entirely made up of original locations? As a dream world players and fans control, it is mostly made up of locations right out of their own imagination. While some areas are based off of real world locations, the vast majority of places you can go to are unique to KDW. Even places with names similar to areas found in the official Kirby games are original maps designed only for KDW. For example, "Ripple Fields" is actually "Seaside Fields." It was given the name Ripple Fields late into KDW's lifetime. It's name was only changed to Ripple Fields for the fans. As for most locations, they keep their original names. Duck Land, Pie Town, the Desert, the Ruins, Sky Way, Lava Town, Ice Town, Rock Cave, Legendary Space, Turtle Island, and so on, are just a small chunk of the areas found in KDW that have no connections to an outside source that also kept their original name without "Kirbyfying" them.

KDW Trivia: Fun Fact #2 - Legend and Legendary Space

Did you know that both the character of "Legend" and the location called "Legendary Space" came from a game Legend and his friends used to play? Back when Kirby Air Ride came out when they were kids, they would role play about different characters, and make up their own stories. Legend was a white Star Warrior who crashed on Pop Star on the Dragoon, and decided to stay there to study it, and characters such as Myth were other "Legendary Star Warriors" whom people didn't believe existed. These characters came from a place called "Legendary Space," and when the stories were being role played, the space stage at the end of Air Ride Mode was used to represent this location.
When KDW was created, Legend used his fan character's name, and used his childhood fanfiction as the basis for the world. The Legend sprite was actually added long before any others, and it wasn't until KDW opened to the public that it began shaping into what it is today. While Legend's story still remained at the core, the world became one fully created by the fans. As for Legendary Space, it wasn't even included until after the community began to shape the world. It started as a single map where you could walk on water (in space!), and it wasn't connected until Dr. Killjoy created Hillside Town. Here, Legendary Space's entrance was hidden by the broken bridge.

Now days, Legendary Space can be accessed many different ways, but just how to get in there, and what can be found is a secret.

KDW Trivia: Fun Fact #1 - The S.S. Legendary and the Sea

Did you know that the ship called the "S.S. Legendary" was actually one of the first areas added to KDW, before there was even a sea? It was created shortly after Rufus returned home from seeing the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and began telling Legend about it. During the conversation Legend pitched the idea to make a pirate ship in KDW, and thus the S.S. Legendary was born.

Originally the S.S. Legendary was cut off from the rest of KDW. To enter you had to either have developer powers, or you would have to have been brought there by a developer. Of course people were brought here freely to role play as a pirate, but it wasn't till much later that it was connected to the rest of the world. Hidden paths were placed around allowing people to access it, but many years later when the sea was added the ship itself appeared close to the main continent for anyone with a ship deed to access.

As for the Sea itself, it was greatly inspired both by the manga and anime series One Piece, as well as an old MMORPG called Tales of Pirates (which was created from Pirate Kings online, and was also inspired by One Piece).
